If you’re looking for a high-fibre breakfast that fills you up, porridge and oats are the way to go. Fine-milled or jumbo options let you choose how smooth you like your porridge to be.

To start your day the classic Scottish way, you’ll want to cook your porridge oats with water and a pinch of salt. A splash of milk or swirl of cream adds richness. Alternatively, you can sweeten your breakfast porridge with golden or maple syrups, or a fruit compote made with berries and cherries. Brew a big pot of breakfast tea or a cup of coffee to wash it down.

Of course, porridge oats aren’t just for breakfast; these store-cupboard staples can be used in all sorts of bakes, too. Flapjacks always go down well as a teatime treat, while chewy oat cookies with plump raisins are decidedly moreish. Porridge oats are the starting point when you’re making your own granola and muesli. It’s up to you what additions you mix in, whether that’s honey, nuts and dried banana or cinnamon and sour cranberries.
